In nationwide surveys conducted by AAA, the majority of American drivers say they don't trust automotive repair centers. The biggest issue, they say, is feeling like they are being pressured into getting maintenance done that they don't really need, just so the service center can make a bigger profit.

So when a service technician recommends you pay almost twice as much money on a synthetic oil change, your first instinct is probably "no."

Chances are, however, that service technician uses synthetic oil for their own car. Of those surveyed, 83 percent of service professionals use synthetic oil themselves. And the results of AAA's recent study prove that synthetic oil is more than just an upsell—it may save you money in the long run.

Across multiple tests, synthetic oil performed 47 percent better than conventional oil. That means, even though synthetic costs about $5 more per month, your return on that investment could be a longer-lasting engine that experiences less wear-and-tear and fewer breakdowns.
